Google Apps - Messages Failing to Send or Receive - 554 Relay Access Denied - psmtp

Try the steps below if you're receiving the following errors when attempting to send, or receive Email from accounts in your Google Apps domain. The issue is related to Postini, the Spam services Google once provided for Google Apps domains. If these settings remained on the MX records of your Domain, or in the Gmail settings of your Google Apps Dashboard, your Email may have recently stopped working.

Example Return Messages:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

123xyz.com

Technical details of permanent failure:

Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain 123xyz.com by 123XYZ.com.s9a1.psmtp.com. [74.125.148.10].

The error that the other server returned was:

554 Relay Access Denied - psmtp

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

123@xyz.net

Technical details of permanent failure:

Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain outbounds9.obsmtp.com by outbounds9.obsmtp.com. [74.125.148.12].

The error that the other server returned was:

554 Relay Access Denied - psmtp

If you're unable to receive messages, try this:

Update the MX records for your domain name. You may have old Postini servers listed here which no longer work. This has to be completed where the domain name is hosted, not in the Google Apps Dashboard.

If you're unable to send messages, try this:

Login to your Google Apps Dashboard, select Google Apps, Gmail, scroll down to Advanced Settings. On the Advanced Settings page scroll down to the 'Routing' section and find 'Outbound Gateway'.

If you have an old Postini server listed here, it may be preventing Email from being sent out from your Domain.

Example:

Delete the server address, save changes. Try to send Email again after 1 hour.
